Thankfully a few times a year there are long 3-days weekends, and these are the best for a short train/road trip, to shift away from the daily routine. I’ve been looking forward to these three days in Vals Valley, in the far east part of Switzerland. The main reason to come here is the Therme Vals (therme baths) info here ; cutting-edge, architectural marvel sourranded by rocky peaks, pastures and forest. A Swiss architect Peter Zhumtor created this beautiful spa using local rock - quarzite. The grey stone, clean lines and enormous glass windows amplifies the feeling of space and light. The story says that Zhumtor intended to not include clocks within the spa as he believed the time should be suspended while enjoying the baths. My body tensions evaporated after long hours in thermal water while watching the raw gorgeous landscape around, full body massage and a few sessions in a steam room.
Vals revealed to be a secret gem; a hidden, narrow valley with steep, bare mountains and thundering waterfalls. As we hiked high above the villages the feeling of the autumn was tangible; steaming clouds gathering on slopes, the colour of vegetation wearing tones of warm ochre, a bit of rain. But it all made it even more special, as personally time feels right to end the summer. I hope to come back here in winter time for a some ski touring followed by a warm bath in the spa. A true pleasure that should not be missed.
