We took some time off the busy schedules and headed to Zermatt for my birthday weekend. It was just an “off season” period in the mountains, slow spring time between winter and summer busy months. The village felt quiet with most hotels and restaurants closed, exactly kind of ambiance we were looking for. It was much needed to find ourselves in a peaceful place with enough comfort to relax. Two days of rest, non-planning and non-rushing did well for our souls after these last hectic weeks. Romantic Hotel Julen was a perfect setting for the purpose; we loved staying in this refuge that felt cosy and nurturing and just a few steps away from the Alps.
This boutique hotel is owned and run by Julen family since 1937 and it is already the third generation that keeps well alive their so known hospitality. I did my research and the hotel continues receiving high rating across many different travel websites. Located a few minutes’ walk from the train station, it sits just across the river. It has a classic yet sophisticated mountain chalet charm, with rooms in light wood, carved wood furniture and small balconies facing two directions: the town and the mighty Matterhorn. There is also a wellness centre with indoor pool and modern spa where I took numerous naps. We had an excellent dinner in the atmospheric hotel restaurant and it’s been long time since I have experienced such professional and attentive hotel personnel. We have spotted a couple of gorgeous dogs in the fireplace area which confirmed that the place is also friendly to pets.
It was time of relaxation and appreciation, some hiking and basking in the warmth of the mountain sun; all I had envisioned and much more for my birthday.
