This is a quarter where Rio de Janeiro as a city began when the Portuguese royals transferred the throne and power to their colony. Today is the Rio's business district, a wild architectural mix of old and new, with modern office towers, beautiful baroque churches, plenty museums, libraries, lovely book stores and cafès. Good to stroll around during a week day as apparently during a weekend the streets are deserted. Great place for lunch is Caffe Ole, which is a beautiful bookstore combined with a bistro.
